Team chemistry is the hidden ingredient that is the difference between the good teams and the great teams. At the beginning of the season programs set out to build incredible teams. You build a team with talented athletes, you add a great coach and as long as everyone works hard and they all like one another you tend to have a recipe for success.
Cheerleading is a sport that is designed in a way that you can only be successful when you are having fun and all getting along. That doesn’t mean you have to be best friends outside of practice and competition, but there has to be a level of mutual respect for everyone on the team. This is something that everyone seems to agree on, it is better to like your teammates rather than not. If you have a team full of athletes that could care less about each other the team will not be successful.
However, team chemistry can turn into a cop-out. When a team is set up to be successful, gets along and is winning everything is good. When that same team hits a down time and stops winning team chemistry tends to get blamed for the downfall rather quickly.
At the end of the day there are several aspects that go into building a successful program. You have to have luck, talent, great coaches and most importantly team chemistry. If one of these aspects is missing the whole season could come to a halting stop. Chemistry alone is not a guarantee that a team will be successful by any means. Always remember that hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.
